Turning your home into an exciting indoor obstacle course is a delightful way to channel energy and creativity. With a few household items and a sprinkle of imagination, you can transform any room into a fun adventure zone.
String Maze
Crisscross string or yarn through a hallway to create a spy-like maze. It’s like Mission Impossible, but without the risk of tripping the alarm!
Hula Hoop Hurdles
Lay hula hoops on the floor as hurdles to jump over or step through. In my studio, we even try spinning them for an added challenge! They make a perfect addition to any indoor obstacle course for youth groups.
Crocodile River
Place pillows as stepping stones across the ‘river’ and pretend they’re the only safe spots. We even add paper crocodiles for dramatic effect! If you want to bring this fun concept to your garden, try making your own pebble stepping stones.
String Laser Challenge
Tape crepe paper across a hallway to form a laser maze. It’s a fun challenge to wiggle through without tearing any ‘lasers’ apart! For more outdoor fun, try incorporating some tire playground ideas into your backyard.
Balance Beam
Lay down a pool noodle or tape a line on the floor for a makeshift balance beam. Even my adult friends can’t resist testing their balancing skills! If you have leftover noodles, you can also use them to build fun DIY mini golf obstacles.
Living Room Leap
Rearrange your furniture to create pathways that kids can leap over or navigate through. In my own living room, we used the couch as a ‘mountain’ to climb and the coffee table as a ‘bridge’ to cross, though we made sure to safely move our mirror coffee table decor out of the way first.
Tunnel Crawl
Create a tunnel using chairs and blankets for a classic crawl challenge. My nieces adore the giggles that come with crawling through our makeshift cave. You can even incorporate this tunnel into a DIY backyard mini golf course.
DIY Zip Line
Create a mini zip line using string and a toy. It’s perfect for adding a dash of thrill to the course, especially when combined with other DIY game ideas!
Hopscotch Heaven
Use painter’s tape to create a hopscotch grid on the floor. It’s an easy way to bring the playground indoors and let everyone relive their childhood games. If you prefer taking the fun outside, try some fun chalk ideas on the driveway.
Shape Shuffle
Use colored tape to create different shapes on the floor and assign actions to each. We love jumping on triangles and spinning on circles!
Bean Bag Balance
Balance a bean bag on your head while walking along a path. It’s a lot trickier than it sounds, and the giggles are guaranteed! This activity is a perfect addition to your sensory path.
Sensory Sack Race
Hand out old pillowcases for a classic sack race across the room. It’s a hilarious way to burn off energy and see who hops the fastest!
Tunnel of Mystery
Use cardboard boxes to create a mini-tunnel to crawl through. We love adding a flashlight for a sense of adventure. If you have smaller cartons lying around, you can also try some fun juice box art ideas.
Pillow Pathway
Scatter pillows across the floor and challenge the kids to hop from one to the next without touching the ground. It’s like a game of ‘the floor is lava’ that we all loved as kids! While the kids are busy burning off energy inside, you can keep your pets active outside with some clever DIY dog run ideas.
