What you need

How to make it, step by step

  1. Step 1: Print the template

    1Print the template

Print your chosen cake slice sheet at 100% on plain printer paper, making sure to turn off “fit to page” in your print settings. Check the scale bar in the top corner: it should measure a precise 2 inches (or 50 mm on A4). Using the coloring page? Grab your markers now and color the sponge layers, wavy frosting, sprinkles, and cherry before adding any tape.

  2. Step 2: Tape the motif

    2Tape the motif

Lay strips of wide clear packing tape across the entire printed cake slice net, making sure to cover all the yellow and blue tabs too. Smooth each strip outward from the center so no air bubbles hide over the cute face or cherry, and don’t stretch the tape as you lay it down.

  3. Step 3: Cut it out

    3Cut it out

Use your scissors to cut neatly along the solid black outer line of the template, keeping every yellow and blue tab attached. Take your time turning the corners around the triangular top and bottom wedges, and never cut into the interior dashed fold lines.

  4. Step 4: Pre-fold every tab

    4Pre-fold every tab

Line up your ruler along each dashed line and score firmly with an empty pen. Fold all the yellow and blue tabs—plus the wall fold lines—inward toward the white back side once, then unfold them again. Pre-creasing now is super important because taped paper is stiff to fold later.

  5. Step 5: Make the walls

    5Make the walls

Fold the cake sides into a triangular ring with the sponge layers and pink frosting facing out. Dab a little glue on the yellow side tab, press it inside to hold the pointed front corner of the slice together, and run a strip of clear tape along the outside seam for its entire length.

  6. Step 6: Close the bottom

    6Close the bottom

Spread glue onto the yellow tabs around the triangular sponge base, fold the bottom triangle in, and press the tabs firmly against the inside of the cake walls. Leave the top triangle with the cherry and kawaii face open so you can fill the slice through it.

  7. Step 7: Tape the bottom

    7Tape the bottom

Because glue alone doesn’t stick to slick tape for long, reinforce the base right away. Lay strips of regular clear tape along every bottom edge from the outside, sealing the entire length of each edge so the base of your cake wedge stays sharp.

  8. Step 8: Stuff it

    8Stuff it

Tuck small, loose scrunches of plastic bag or tiny tufts of fiberfill in through the open top triangle. Push a tiny bit down into the narrow tip of the wedge first, then fill the rest lightly so the sponge walls stay flat and don’t bulge out.

  9. Step 9: Close it

    9Close it

Fold the blue tabs inward and lower the frosted top lid with the cherry and candle over the stuffing. Seal every upper edge from the outside with regular clear tape, running the tape along the full length of each edge.

  10. Step 10: Squish!

    10Squish!

Your 3D cake slice is ready! Give the frosted wedge a gentle squeeze and watch it puff right back into shape. If you want a slow-rising feel, prick one tiny pinhole along a seam so the air escapes slowly.

Tips for the perfect squish

  • Pointed tip looks crumpled. Score every dashed line with an empty pen and a ruler before folding so the narrow front edge of the cake slice bends cleanly.
  • Triangle lid pops open. Glue doesn’t hold on tape-covered paper, so press a fresh strip of regular clear tape along the whole length of the seam from the outside.
  • Cake sides bulge outward. There is too much stuffing inside the wedge. Pull a little bit out before sealing the top so the rectangular sides stay flat and neat.
  • Ripples over the pink frosting. Cut shorter strips of packing tape and lay them down gently from the center without pulling or stretching.

Questions

How do you make a paper squishy cake slice without the seams popping?

Glue only holds the yellow tabs in place while you assemble the wedge; it won’t stick to tape-covered paper for long. Always seal every glued seam and the blue lid tabs from the outside with regular clear tape along the entire edge.

What paper works best for a 3D paper squishy cake template?

Standard plain printer paper (80–100 gsm / 20–24 lb) is ideal. Heavy cardstock becomes too stiff once covered in packing tape and makes the cake slice hard to fold and squish.

What can I stuff my cake paper squishy with?

You can use loosely scrunched plastic grocery bags for a light, crinkly bounce or soft fiberfill for a plush squeeze. Just stuff the wedge lightly so the flat sponge sides keep their crisp shape.

Can I print the cake slice paper squishy template larger?

Yes! If you print the template enlarged on a bigger sheet of paper, everything scales up together because the entire 3D cake slice is a single connected net.

Can I make these cake squishies with a class or party group?

Definitely—plan for about 45 minutes. Print one sheet per person and pre-cut the clear tape strips; kids can color the cake coloring page while an adult helps with scoring and taping the edges.
