What you need

How to make it, step by step

  1. Step 1: Print the template

    1Print the template

Print your matcha latte net at 100% on plain printer paper, making sure to turn off the “fit to page” setting. Check that the scale bar on the page measures 2 inches (50 mm on A4). If you chose the coloring page version, color the green tea swirls, ice cubes, and rosy cheeks right now before any tape goes on.

  2. Step 2: Tape the motif

    2Tape the motif

Laminate the entire printed matcha cup design with wide clear packing tape, making sure to cover all the yellow glue tabs as well. Smooth each strip out starting from the center and working toward the edges, and do not stretch the tape as you lay it down so the paper stays flat.

  3. Step 3: Cut it out

    3Cut it out

Cut carefully along the solid outer black line around the curved wrapper and the two circles. Keep the top straw lid and the leafy bottom circle attached to the main cup body at their narrow hinges, and never cut along any of the dashed fold lines.

  4. Step 4: Pre-fold every tab

    4Pre-fold every tab

Use your empty pen and a ruler to score along all the dashed lines, following the gentle curve at the top and bottom of the wrapper. Fold every yellow tab and both circle hinges inward toward the blank white side once, then unfold them again so they are ready to assemble.

  5. Step 5: Snip the bottom tabs

    5Snip the bottom tabs

Use your scissors to snip only the short solid lines between the yellow bottom tabs, stopping right at the dashed fold line. Leave the top row of tabs near the ice cubes uncut for now so the rim stays sturdy while you roll the cup.

  6. Step 6: Roll the wrapper

    6Roll the wrapper

Curve the wrapper into a tapered cup tube with the smiling matcha face on the outside. Put glue on the long yellow side tab to hold the seam closed on the inside, then run a strip of clear tape along the outside seam from top to bottom.

  7. Step 7: Glue the bottom on

    7Glue the bottom on

Fold all the snipped bottom tabs inward. Put glue onto their outer yellow side, which is now facing up toward you. Swing the patterned bottom circle closed against the sticky tabs and press firmly so the creamy base of the cup takes its round shape.

  8. Step 8: Tape the bottom

    8Tape the bottom

Because craft glue alone will not hold onto slick tape for long, reinforce the base right away. Wrap overlapping strips of regular clear tape all the way around the bottom edge so the circle is completely sealed to the lower cream wall of the cup.

  9. Step 9: Snip the top tabs

    9Snip the top tabs

Now go to the wide upper rim of the cup and snip the short solid lines between the yellow top tabs, cutting right up to the dashed fold line. This allows the tabs to bend cleanly around the wide circular opening.

  10. Step 10: Stuff it

    10Stuff it

Stand your matcha cup upright on the table and hold the straw lid folded back out of the way. Push plastic bag or fluffy fiberfill lightly through the open top until the cup looks plump from the creamy bottom up to the ice cubes.

  11. Step 11: Glue the lid on

    11Glue the lid on

Fold the top row of tabs inward over the stuffing. Spread glue onto their yellow outer faces, which are now pointing up. Fold the circular iced straw lid down onto the sticky tabs and press it firmly into place to close the drink.

  12. Step 12: Tape the lid

    12Tape the lid

Since glue alone does not stick permanently to the taped surface, lock the lid down from the outside. Apply overlapping strips of regular clear tape all the way around the top rim so the lid edge stays shut whenever you squeeze the cup.

  13. Step 13: Squish!

    13Squish!

Your kawaii iced matcha latte is ready! Give the cup a squeeze and watch the green tea wrapper puff right back into shape. If you want a slower rise after squeezing, prick one tiny pinhole into a seam to let air escape smoothly.

Tips for the perfect squish

  • Keep the curved rim smooth. Score the arched dashed lines along the top ice cube border and bottom edge carefully with an empty pen and a ruler before folding so the round cup rims don’t crease awkwardly.
  • A cup seam pops open. Glue only holds the tabs temporarily while you build, so press a fresh strip of clear tape smoothly over any vertical or circular seam that starts to lift.
  • The tapered sides bulge out. If the cute face looks stretched or the flat bottom wobbles, there is too much stuffing—take some out so the cup keeps its neat tapered shape.
  • Wrinkles over the matcha print. Use shorter strips of clear tape around the curved top and bottom circles, laying them down without pulling so the glossy green print stays smooth.

Questions

Can I assemble this matcha cup using only glue?

No, glue only tacks the yellow tabs in place while you shape the cup. Because glue will not stay stuck to tape-covered paper, every seam must be sealed from the outside with clear tape.

What paper works best for a printable paper squishy template?

Plain printer paper (80–100 gsm / 20–24 lb) is ideal. Heavy cardstock is hard to fold once covered in packing tape and makes the finished squishy too stiff.

How do I stuff a drink cup paper squishy?

You can use plastic grocery bags for a light, crinkly feel or fiberfill for a soft plush bounce. Stuff the cup lightly so the round lid and base stay neat.

Can I make this matcha latte squishy bigger?

Yes! At 100% scale the finished cup is about 2.2 × 2.8 in (5.6 × 7.2 cm), but you can print the sheet larger on bigger paper—since the lid, base, and wrapper are one piece, everything still fits together.

Can I make these with a class or a group?

Yes! Print a template sheet for everyone, pre-cut strips of clear tape in advance, and plan about 45 minutes. Kids can color the swirl and ice cubes on the coloring page while you help with scoring and taping.
