What you need
How to make it, step by step
1Print the template
Print your chosen matcha butter page at 100% scale on plain printer paper, making sure “fit to page” is turned off. Check the scale bar in the top corner: it should measure exactly 2 inches (50 mm on A4). If you picked the line-art coloring page or blank layout, color in the green swirl, tea leaves, and cute butter mascot now before adding any tape.
2Tape the motif
Lay strips of wide clear packing tape across the entire printed matcha butter net, making sure you cover all the yellow and blue tabs too. Smooth each strip down starting from the center and working outward without stretching the tape. This gives the wrapper a glossy look and keeps the paper strong when you squish it.
3Cut it out
Use your scissors to cut neatly along the solid black outer line of the template, keeping every yellow and blue tab attached. Take your time around the angled corners of the tabs so they stay intact. Never cut along the interior dashed lines—those are your fold lines for building the rectangular butter block.
4Pre-fold every tab
Line up your ruler along each dashed line and run an empty pen firmly over it to score the paper. Fold every single tab and box crease inward toward the unprinted white side once, then unfold it flat again. Taped paper gets stiff, so pre-folding now gives your matcha butter crisp, boxy corners later.
5Make the walls
Curve the side panels—the front label, the tea whisk side, the squish facts back, and the flower side—into a rectangular ring with the artwork facing out. Put a dab of glue on the yellow side tab, press it inside the opposite wall to hold the loop together, and seal the entire seam from the outside with regular clear tape.
6Close the bottom
Spread glue onto the yellow tabs surrounding the dotted leaf bottom panel. Fold the bottom panel inward to close the base of the butter block, reaching inside to press the glued tabs firmly against the inner walls. Leave the top panel with the green matcha swirl and blue tabs wide open for stuffing.
7Tape the bottom
Since craft glue will not stay stuck to slick packing tape on its own, reinforce the base right away. Place strips of regular clear tape along every bottom edge from the outside, running the tape the full length of each seam so the dotted bottom stays securely shut when squeezed.
8Stuff it
Tuck loose, airy scrunches of plastic grocery bag or small pinches of fiberfill in through the open top. Push a little bit gently into the corners first, then fill the center. Stuff the matcha butter lightly so the wrapper walls stay flat and square instead of bulging out.
9Close it
Fold the blue tabs inward and bring the green swirl lid down over the opening to close your butter block. Hold the lid steady and apply regular clear tape along every top edge from the outside, sealing the full length of each seam so the lid stays shut.
10Squish!
Your kawaii matcha butter paper squishy is ready! Give the block a gentle squeeze and watch the glossy green wrapper puff right back into shape. If the air is completely trapped and you want a smoother, slow-rising squish, prick one tiny pinhole in an inconspicuous corner.

Tips for the perfect squish
- Keep the butter block rectangular. Because this motif is a crisp rectangular block, overstuffing quickly makes the long front and back panels round out. Remove a pinch of filling if the “Matcha Butter” label starts to bow.
- Crisp corners on the swirl lid. Score the dashed lines around the top green swirl extra firmly with your empty pen and ruler before folding. Sharp creases help the lid sit flat when you tape the blue tabs shut.
- Smooth tape over the dark green. Air bubbles show up easily against the rich green matcha artwork. Use shorter strips of packing tape and smooth them from the middle outward without pulling.
- Fixing a popped edge seam. Glue alone does not hold on tape-covered tabs once you start squishing. If a corner lifts, press it back down and run a fresh strip of clear tape along the whole outside edge.
Questions
How do you make a paper butter squishy stay together without popping open?
Glue only holds the yellow tabs in place while you assemble the box, because glue cannot stick to slick tape for long. To make your butter squishy last, seal every glued seam and the final blue-tab lid from the outside along their full length with clear tape.
What paper works best for a printable butter paper squishy template?
Standard plain printer paper (80–100 gsm / 20–24 lb) is ideal. Heavy cardstock becomes too stiff to fold cleanly once covered in packing tape and won’t squish nicely.
What can I stuff my paper butter squishy with?
You can use plastic grocery bags for a light, crinkly feel or polyester fiberfill for a soft plush bounce. Either way, stuff the box lightly so the rectangular butter shape stays neat.
Can I print the template larger or make a whole butter collection?
Yes! Because the net is all one piece, you can print it larger on a bigger sheet of paper and the tabs will still fit together, or keep it at 100% to match our salted butter squishy.
Can I make this craft with a classroom or party group?
Definitely—plan for about 45 minutes and print one sheet per kid. Have them color the black-and-white version while an adult pre-cuts tape strips and helps with scoring and taping.
