What you need
How to make it, step by step
1Print the template
Print your chosen salted butter page at 100% on plain printer paper (make sure to turn off “fit to page”). Check the scale bar at the top right: it should measure exactly 2 inches (50 mm on A4). Picked the coloring page? Color the butter top a creamy yellow and shade the blue waves and salt crystals now before adding any tape.
2Tape the motif
Cover the entire printed butter wrapper with wide clear packing tape, making sure to include all the yellow and blue tabs. Lay each strip down across the long row of side panels and smooth it outward from the center without stretching it. This glossy layer gives the salted butter block its classic shiny wrapper look and makes the paper strong enough to squeeze.
3Cut it out
Cut carefully along the solid black outer line with your scissors, keeping every glue tab and tape tab attached. Take your time around the angled corners of the tabs so they stay neat and wide. Do not cut any of the interior dashed lines—those are the fold lines that shape the rectangular butter block.
4Pre-fold every tab
Use your ruler and an empty pen to score firmly along every dashed line, both around the long wrapper panels and on every tab. Fold each line and tab inward toward the blank white back once, then open it again. Pre-folding now is super important because taped paper is stiff and tricky to bend once the box is partly built.
5Make the walls
Fold the side panels—the front logo, the “Squish Facts” back, and the two short ends—into a rectangular ring with the artwork facing out. Put a dab of glue on the yellow side tab and press it inside the opposite edge to hold the ring together, then run a strip of clear tape along the outside of that seam from top to bottom.
6Close the bottom
Swipe glue onto the three yellow tabs surrounding the blue-and-yellow patterned bottom panel. Fold the bottom flap in and reach inside the open box to press those glued tabs firmly against the inner walls so the base sits flat. Leave the top panel with the sparkly yellow butter surface and blue tabs completely open for stuffing.
7Tape the bottom
Because craft glue will not hold on slick packing tape for long, you need to reinforce the base right away. Lay strips of regular clear tape along every bottom edge from the outside, covering the full length of both long sides and both short ends so no stuffing can push the corners open later.
8Stuff it
Push small, loose scrunches of plastic grocery bag or fluffy bits of fiberfill in through the open top of the wrapper. Tuck a little into the corners first, then fill the middle lightly. Keep the stuffing airy so the salted butter block stays crisp and square instead of bulging out like a round pillow.
9Close it
Fold the three blue tabs along the yellow butter top inward and close the lid over the stuffing like a real butter box. Hold the lid snug against the walls and tape every top edge from the outside with regular clear tape, running the tape all the way along the edge from corner to corner.
10Squish!
Your salted butter squishy is ready! Give the rectangular block a gentle squeeze and watch the glossy wrapper puff right back into shape. If you want a slow-rising squishy when you press it, prick one tiny pinhole along a taped corner so air can escape and refill smoothly.

Tips for the perfect squish
- Keep the butter edges crisp. A butter block looks best with sharp, boxy corners rather than rounded sides. Score every dashed line firmly with an empty pen and a ruler before you fold so the taped paper creases cleanly.
- Stop long seams from popping. The long horizontal edges on the yellow top and patterned bottom take the most pressure when you squeeze. Since glue does not hold on tape, put a new strip of clear tape along the whole seam.
- Fix a bulging butter block. If the front mascot and “Squish Facts” panel bow outward, there is too much stuffing inside. Take some filling out so the rectangular wrapper walls stay flat.
- Smooth tape over the wrapper. The wide layout spans across the long row of panels, which can make long tape strips wrinkle. Use shorter strips of packing tape and lay them on gently without pulling.
Questions
How do you make a butter squishy out of paper?
Print our template on plain paper, cover the motif with clear packing tape, and cut along the solid outer line. Score and fold the dashed lines into a rectangular box, glue the yellow tabs inside to hold them, tape every seam from the outside, and stuff it lightly before taping the top shut.
Can I build this paper butter squishy with only glue?
No, glue just holds the yellow tabs in place while you build the walls and bottom. It does not stick to tape-covered paper for long, so every glued seam gets a strip of clear tape from the outside.
What paper works best for a printable butter paper squishy template?
Plain printer paper (80–100 gsm / 20–24 lb) gives you the best squish. Cardstock is hard to fold once it is taped and makes the small butter block too stiff.
What can I stuff the butter wrapper with?
You can use plastic grocery bags for a crinkly, light feel or fiberfill for a soft bounce. Stuff the wrapper lightly so the rectangular shape stays neat and flat.
Can I make these with a class or a group?
Yes! Print one sheet per person and cut tape strips in advance before you start. Kids can color the coloring page while you help with scoring and taping—plan about 45 minutes.
