What you need
How to make it, step by step
1Print the template
Print your butter block sheet at 100% scale on plain printer paper, making sure to turn off the “fit to page” setting. Check the scale bar in the top corner—it should measure exactly 2 inches (50 mm on A4). If you picked the coloring page, color the creamy yellow swirls, the little cow, and the daisies now before taping.
2Tape the motif
Lay strips of wide clear packing tape across the entire printed motif, covering the tabs too. Smooth each strip down from the center outward without stretching it. This gives your sweet cream wrapper that shiny, laminated look and makes the paper strong enough to squish.
3Cut it out
Use your scissors to cut neatly along the solid black outer line, making sure to keep all the yellow and blue tabs attached. Take your time around the angled corners of the tabs, and be careful never to cut into the dashed fold lines.
4Pre-fold every tab
Line up your ruler along every dashed line and trace over it firmly with an empty pen to score the paper. Fold each tab and box crease inward toward the blank white side once, then open it again—taped paper is much harder to crease neatly once the box takes shape.
5Make the walls
Bring the middle panels—the front logo, the cow side, the “Squish Facts” back, and the heart side—around into a rectangular ring with the artwork facing out. Glue the yellow side tab inside to hold the corner, then tape that seam along its whole length from the outside with clear tape.
6Close the bottom
Spread a little glue onto the yellow bottom tabs. Fold the plain pale-yellow bottom panel inward and press the tabs firmly against the inside walls so the base of your butter block sits flat. Leave the top panel with the swirly butter texture open for filling.
7Tape the bottom
Because glue alone does not hold on slick tape for long, reinforce the base now. Run strips of regular clear tape along every bottom edge from the outside, sealing all along the edge from corner to corner so no stuffing can poke through.
8Stuff it
Push loose scrunches of plastic bag or soft tufts of fiberfill in through the open top. Gently tuck a bit into the corners first, then fill the center lightly so the butter block stays crisp and square instead of rounding out.
9Close it
Fold the blue tabs inward and bring the swirly top lid down over the opening. Hold the lid snug against the walls and tape every top edge from the outside with clear tape, covering the full length of each edge.
10Squish!
Done! Your finished butter block measures about 2.3 × 1.2 in (5.8 × 3.0 cm) and is ready to play with. Give it a squeeze and watch the golden wrapper puff right back up. For a slow-rising squishy, prick one tiny pinhole.

Tips for the perfect squish
- Keep the butter edges crisp. A block of butter looks best with neat rectangular corners, so score every dashed line with an empty pen and a ruler before you fold.
- Stop the wrapper from bulging. If the front “Sweet Cream” label puffs out of shape, there is too much stuffing—take some out so the sides stay flat.
- Smooth tape over the swirls. Wrinkles show up easily on the pale yellow artwork, so use shorter strips of tape and lay them on without pulling.
- Fix a popping corner seam. Glue does not hold on tape for long, so if a seam pops open, put a new strip of clear tape along the whole seam.
Questions
How do you make a paper butter squishy without it popping open?
Glue only holds the yellow tabs in place while you build, because it does not stick to tape-covered paper for long. Every glued seam—plus the top lid—needs a strip of clear tape from the outside along the whole edge.
What paper works best for a butter squishy template?
Plain printer paper (80–100 gsm / 20–24 lb) works best. Cardstock is hard to fold once it is taped and makes the butter squishy stiff.
What can I stuff my paper butter squishy with?
You can use plastic grocery bags for a light, crinkly feel or fiberfill for a soft bounce. Stuff the butter block lightly so the shape stays neat.
Can I print this 3D paper squishy template larger?
Yes! Print the page larger on a bigger sheet of paper—all parts of the butter wrapper are one piece, so they always fit together.
Can I make this craft with a classroom or party group?
Yes, plan about 45 minutes. Print one sheet per person and cut tape strips in advance so kids can color the coloring page while you help with scoring and taping.
